Three Things I Learned from Reading Anne Lamott’s Traveling Mercies
Pantheon Books, $23, ISBN 0-679-44240-5, 1999
Prayer doesn’t have to be complicated. Ask for for help upon waking, and say thank you before falling asleep. I’m trying to incorporate these simple but powerful bookends into my daily life.
If nothing else, read her chapter on forgiveness. Those 10 pages should be required reading for everyone.
Lamott dedicates a chapter to her signature dreadlocks, which I have to admit, always made me pause. The hairstyle was a matter of sanity, as nothing else could tame her naturally frizzy and coarse locks and allowed her to focus on more important things (like writing) than what the weather would do to her hair. I am grateful for her dreadlocks!
